LEPAS L8 PHEV Ships Nearly 1,500 Units to Six European Nations, Expanding Market

China's Chery Group has shipped nearly 1,500 units of its LEPAS L8 PHEV SUV from Wuhu Port to six European countries, marking what the company calls its "Year of Delivery," according to Yahoo Finance. The vehicles are bound for Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, and Romania — a major push by a Chinese NEV brand into mainstream European markets.
The shipment ceremony signals LEPAS's ambition to compete directly with established European and Asian automakers in the fast-growing plug-in hybrid SUV segment. The brand is positioning itself around what it calls "Drive Your Elegance" — a pitch aimed squarely at style-conscious European buyers.
The L8 PHEV is a five-seat SUV built on LEPAS's in-house LEX Platform, according to Goldea Capital. Chery Group designed the car using what it calls "Leopard Aesthetics" — a design language meant to match what European buyers find visually appealing. The company says the style is meant to feel premium, not just functional.
The six destination countries — Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, and Romania — span Southern and Eastern Europe. These are markets where Chinese NEV brands have made recent inroads, partly due to lower price points and improving build quality, according to UK Yahoo Finance.
LEPAS is not pitching the L8 on price alone. The brand's stated goal is to become the "Preferred Brand for Elegant Mobility Life," according to Canadian Yahoo Finance. That's a direct play at buyers who want a stylish, comfortable SUV — not just a cheap electric alternative.
The LEX Platform underpins the L8's engineering. Chery says it was built to support a range of NEV powertrains. The PHEV setup means drivers get an electric motor combined with a petrol engine — useful in European markets where charging infrastructure is still uneven.
This shipment is part of a broader wave of Chinese automakers targeting Europe. Chinese NEV exports to Europe have grown sharply in recent years, prompting the European Union to impose additional tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles in 2024. LEPAS's PHEV focus may help it sidestep some of those tariff pressures, which targeted battery-electric vehicles more directly.
Italy, Spain, and Greece are among Europe's largest auto markets by volume. Croatia, Slovenia, and Romania represent smaller but growing markets where brand loyalty is less entrenched. For a new entrant like LEPAS, that mix offers both scale and an opening, according to Goldea Capital.
Chery Group has framed 2025 as LEPAS's "Year of Delivery" — meaning this shipment is meant to be the first of many, not a one-time event. The company has not yet disclosed pricing for European markets or confirmed dealership networks in all six countries, according to Yahoo Finance.
LEPAS faces stiff competition. The European SUV market includes well-established rivals from Germany, South Korea, and Japan. But Chery has experience exporting — it already sells vehicles under other brands in more than 80 countries. LEPAS is its premium NEV bet, and this shipment is its opening move.
