Amazon Business Offers Free Purchasing Tools, But Is It Worth It?

Amazon Business is a free platform that lets organizations buy workplace supplies online with no credit card required to join. The Colorado Anan reports it combines Amazon's familiar shopping experience with business-specific tools for managing purchases, comparing prices, and tracking spending. The free tier gives access to over 50 million business-priced items.
The platform has grown rapidly: Amazon announced it reached $60 billion in annualized sales in mid-2026, with 11 million active organization accounts across 11 countries. About 1 in 3 U.S. B2B e-commerce transactions now happen on Amazon Business, making it a serious player in workplace procurement.
Joining Amazon Business costs nothing—no fees, no credit card needed. Yahoo Tech explains that the free tier lets you shop from millions of items, compare products, and set up basic team accounts. However, Amazon offers paid upgrades called Business Prime, starting at $179 per year. These add-ons unlock spend analytics, custom approval workflows, and extended payment terms of 45 to 60 days for larger purchases.
Amazon Business works best for office managers, small business owners, and procurement teams who want simpler buying. The Colorado Anan notes the platform is designed for anyone handling workplace purchases. Large companies like Citi, Marriott, and Carnival Corporation use it. The ease of searching multiple products in one place beats checking individual supplier websites.
One major downside: easy employee access can lead to "maverick spending"—workers buying outside approved contracts. Procurement experts warn that while Amazon Business cuts shopping time, it can increase overall spend if not carefully managed. Tradeshift points out that giving many staff members buying power risks bypassing your established vendor agreements and budget controls. Your company's purchasing data also goes to Amazon, which competes in many industries.
Ask yourself: Does your team need bulk discounts or approval workflows? The free tier works if you want basic shopping convenience. But if you have strict budget rules or negotiate special vendor rates, you'll need the paid Business Prime plan to enforce those controls. Amazon says procurement tasks that took hours—searching vendors, routing approvals, reordering—now take minutes, but only if your team uses the tools correctly.
