Aspen Dental Launches New Program to Recognize and Support Dental Hygiene Graduates Nationwide

Aspen Dental has launched a new program called "Aligned With Aspen Dental" to recruit and recognize newly graduated dental hygienists joining its network of over 1,100 offices across 45 states, PR Newswire reported. The move comes as 91% of U.S. dentists say hiring hygienists is "very or extremely challenging," according to Dr. Bicuspid, citing data from the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute.
The program offers new graduates onboarding support, mentorship, and continuing education through TAG U — Aspen's in-house training platform. Roughly 1 in 4 hygienist positions in the U.S. currently sit unfilled, according to Yahoo Finance, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data.
The dental hygiene labor market flipped sharply after COVID-19. What was once an oversaturated field saw a mass exit of workers due to burnout and safety fears. By April 2026, only 60% of U.S. dentists had enough hygienists on staff, according to the ADA Health Policy Institute. The American Dental Hygienists' Association, which represents 220,000 hygienists, called it a "retention crisis" in a May 2026 position statement, Yahoo Finance reported.
Wages have climbed steeply. The median annual pay for hygienists hit $94,260 as of May 2024, with figures trending higher in 2026, per PR Newswire. Sign-on bonuses of $5,000 and hourly rates of $50 are now common in many markets. With 33% of current hygienists expected to retire within five years, Aspen is betting on fresh graduates to fill the gap.
The program centers on three pillars: structured onboarding, a mentorship track, and access to TAG U — the company's training platform recognized as a "Top 50 Worldwide" learning organization in December 2024, PR Newswire reported. Aspen also highlights "Clinical Corner Live" sessions and a Hygiene Onboarding Program, known internally as HOP, designed specifically for new graduates entering the workforce.
Colby Wilson, a University of Arkansas graduate featured in the launch announcement, said: "Giving back isn't something extra — it's the foundation of what it means to be a dental hygienist," according to Yahoo Finance. Aspen also points to Lori D'Anna, now President of Field Operations, as a model. D'Anna started as a patient service representative 25 years ago and is a trained hygienist herself.
The ADHA argues that aggressive recruitment campaigns do not fix the root issue: poor workplace culture and undervaluation of hygienists. Their May 2026 position statement said the industry needs practice-level changes, not just faster hiring. Employee reviews cited by research staff on platforms like Indeed, including posts from Chicago and Baton Rouge in June 2026, describe "hostile work environments" and "unrealistic goals." One reviewer noted that despite online training tools, "there is no time for training" because of high patient volume.
There is also legal pressure on Aspen. In May 2026, the California Attorney General reached a settlement with the company over compliance with the Corporate Practice of Medicine doctrine — rules meant to protect clinical independence from corporate influence, according to ADVFN. Regulators are watching whether "alignment" programs cross the line into directing clinical decisions at independently owned offices.
Beyond the talent competition, Aspen says the program could improve care access. Around 61 million Americans live in dental health professional shortage areas, according to the Health Resources and Services Administration. By placing new graduates across its nationwide network, Aspen argues it can reach rural and underserved communities that small private practices cannot staff, PR Newswire noted.
The program also leans into technology. Aspen's VP of Hygiene Strategy and Operations, Dr. Rute Ramalho, focuses on AI-enabled decay detection and 3D intra-oral scanning — tools that shape the training new hires receive. Enrollment in hygiene programs rose 16% from 2020 to 2025, per ADA data, giving Aspen a growing pool of tech-ready graduates to target.
