Planet Labs Successfully Launches Pelican-11 Tech Demonstrator for Next-Gen High-Resolution Satellite Fleet

Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL) successfully launched Pelican-11, a next-generation technology demonstration satellite, aboard SpaceX's Transporter-17 rideshare mission on July 7, 2026, according to Business Wire. The spacecraft lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Pelican-11, known internally as TD2, is the second tech demo satellite for Planet's Gen 2 high-resolution Pelican fleet. It is built to test new technologies before they are added to future operational satellites, according to AP News.
Pelican-11 is not a regular imaging satellite. Planet calls it an "engineering pathfinder." Its job is to prove out new tools and systems before they fly on full production spacecraft, according to Business Wire. Think of it as a test run for future technology.
