Scandit Enters Loss Prevention Market With New Vision AI Solution

Scandit has launched Self-Checkout Loss Prevention, a new vision AI system that cuts retail losses at self-checkout by over 75%, according to Scandit. The technology detects missed scans and skipped items in real time, then prompts shoppers to self-correct without stopping the checkout flow. This approach tackles a major pain point for retailers: how to prevent theft while keeping the shopping experience smooth and fast.
The system uses computer vision to spot four common loss types: missed scans, intentionally skipped items, products left in shopping carts, and abandoned transactions, as Scandit explains. When the AI detects a problem, it alerts the shopper instantly so they can correct it themselves. No store associate needed. The result: losses drop sharply while customers stay happy because checkout keeps moving.
Unlike older loss prevention systems, this solution uses per-station architecture. Each self-checkout station runs the AI independently, with no need for a dedicated server room or complicated installation, per Scandit. This design makes it easy for retailers to roll out the system across small convenience stores or sprawling hypermarkets. Deployment becomes faster and cheaper for businesses of any size.
Scandit designed the system with data privacy as a core feature, Scandit states. The company holds ISO 27001 certification, a global security standard. The technology is built to help retailers meet GDPR obligations in Europe and similar privacy laws elsewhere. Retailers can fight loss without collecting personal data or violating customer privacy rights.
