Smoke detected at Torre Moeve, a prominent Madrid skyscraper, raising concerns

A visible column of black smoke rising from the upper floors of Torre Moeve — one of Madrid's four famous skyscrapers and the second-tallest building in Spain at 248 meters — triggered a major emergency response on Monday morning. El Periódico de Aragón and other outlets reported the alarm spread quickly through the city, with thousands of workers inside the tower and bystanders on the Paseo de la Castellana filming the scene in real time.
By 12:10 PM, Madrid emergency services declared the situation under control. Zero injuries were reported. The cause was a smoldering HVAC filter unit on the 41st floor — a machinery level — not an open fire reaching the building's structure or facade.
The first automated fire alarm from the building's internal sensors fired at 11:22 AM, triggered specifically on the 41st floor. Within six minutes, five units from the Bomberos de Madrid were dispatched. Police cordoned off the entire base of the Cuatro Torres Business Area (CTBA) to keep pedestrians back. Levante-EMV reported that firefighters reached the 41st floor using high-speed service lifts, not stairwells.
Firefighters found the source: a burned-out air filtration unit inside the building's HVAC system — the network of ducts that heats, cools, and ventilates the tower. There were no open flames on the facade. A total of 12 emergency vehicles were mobilized. Roughly 2,500 employees were inside the building at the time. Floors 40 through 45 were partially evacuated. Lower floors were told to stay in place.
Samur-Protección Civil, Madrid's civil protection service, set up medical support at the scene. They confirmed zero casualties and zero cases of smoke inhalation. A Moeve spokesperson said: "Our automatic suppression systems functioned exactly as designed. At no point was the structural integrity of the tower or the safety of our staff at risk," according to La Opinión de Murcia.
The building's design played a key role. Under Spain's Technical Building Code, skyscrapers taller than 100 meters must have pressurized stairwells and refuge floors every few stories to stop smoke from spreading. Those features kept the smoke contained to the machinery level. Estimated repair costs — replacing the HVAC unit and cleaning smoke damage — range from €150,000 to €200,000. Structural damage: zero.
For about 40 minutes, social media in Spain went into overdrive. "Torre Cepsa" and "Incendio Madrid" trended nationally on X (formerly Twitter). Many users incorrectly compared the scene to the catastrophic 2005 Windsor Tower fire, which gutted a 32-story Madrid office block. The visual of black smoke against a clear sky was enough to send the story viral before any official update arrived, La Opinión Coruña reported.
Moeve's corporate communications team moved quickly to shape the narrative. The company avoided the word "incendio" (fire) entirely, using "incidencia técnica" (technical incident) and "emisión de humos" (smoke emission) in all official statements. Madrid Mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida praised the "swift coordination between the building's private security and the city's emergency services" in a post on X.
The Madrid City Council is now likely to order a full inspection of HVAC systems across all four skyscrapers in the CTBA district — Torre Moeve, Torre de Cristal, Torre Espacio, and Torre Bankia. The goal is to confirm the filter failure was not a wider systemic problem with aging machinery shared across the complex. Spanish architects noted that the "chimney effect" — where heat and smoke rush upward through a tall building like air through a pipe — is the primary danger in towers this size.
Labor unions, including UGT, used the incident to reignite a debate about mandatory remote work during maintenance cycles in high-rise buildings. Insurance analysts also expect a modest rise in premiums for top-tier Madrid skyscrapers, as insurers reassess "business interruption" risks tied to machinery failures. The building was fully reopened to workers by 1:00 PM — less than two hours after the first alarm.
