Justin Verlander made a tearful farewell to his 21-year career as the Detroit Tigers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. Verlander was accompanied by his 7-year-old daughter as he left the mound for the final time in the game. He allowed two runs and five hits in five 1/3 innings, with one walk and six strikeouts. The Tigers' Eduardo Valencia scored a game-ending two-run homer in a three-run ninth. Verander finished 266-159 in 557 starts with a 3.33 ERA and 3,560 strikeouts. Pirates' Kirby Yates made his first career start after 517 relief appearances.
