Visa Acquires BioCatch for $2.4 Billion to Enhance AI-Powered Fraud Protection

Visa has agreed to buy BioCatch for $2.4 billion in cash, the payments giant announced. BioCatch uses AI and behavioral analysis to spot fraud in real time — tracking how people type, swipe, and navigate to tell real users from criminals. Toronto Sun reported the deal will be purchased from funds advised by private equity firm Permira and other shareholders.
The deal is expected to close by the end of Visa's fiscal second quarter of 2027, subject to standard regulatory approvals. Ontario Farmer noted the acquisition is designed to help Visa's clients fight a rising wave of account takeovers, scams, money mules, and application fraud.
BioCatch does not just check passwords or device IDs. It analyzes thousands of signals — how a person holds their phone, how fast they scroll, how they fill out a form. These behavioral patterns are nearly impossible for fraudsters to fake. The system uses machine learning to flag suspicious sessions in real time, before any money moves.
The company's technology targets some of the fastest-growing fraud types. Account takeover fraud happens when a criminal hijacks a real person's account. Money mule schemes use innocent people to move stolen funds. Application fraud involves crooks opening new accounts with fake identities. BioCatch's AI is built to catch all three, according to Fairview Post.
Visa processes billions of transactions each year. Fraud costs its clients — banks, merchants, and consumers — enormous sums. Adding BioCatch's fraud intelligence directly into Visa's network means clients get real-time protection without needing to buy separate tools. It is a major expansion of Visa's security layer beyond just card verification.
Permira, the private equity firm selling BioCatch, had backed the company's growth into a global fraud intelligence leader. At $2.4 billion, the deal reflects how valuable real-time fraud detection has become. Financial institutions worldwide are under pressure to stop fraud before it happens, not just clean up after it, according to Ontario Farmer.
Traditional fraud tools look at what someone does — like entering a wrong PIN. BioCatch looks at how they do it. A fraudster using stolen login credentials still behaves differently than the real account owner. That difference is what BioCatch's system is trained to catch, even when every password and security question is correct.
Scams are a particular focus. In scam fraud, victims are tricked into sending money themselves — meaning the transaction looks completely legitimate to old-style systems. BioCatch can detect the stress patterns and unusual behavior that often appear when someone is being manipulated, according to Hanna Herald.
Visa expects the acquisition to close by the end of its fiscal second quarter of 2027. That gives regulators roughly a year and a half to review the deal. Both companies must meet standard closing conditions before the transaction is final. No details have been released yet about how BioCatch will be integrated into Visa's existing products.
For Visa, the purchase fits a broader strategy of owning the security tools its network depends on. BioCatch already works with major banks and financial institutions around the world.
