Snapchat Launches "Now Playing" on Snap Map for Real-Time Music Sharing with Spotify

Snap Map has a massive user base, with more than 450 million monthly users, which amplifies the potential reach of Now Playing.
Spotify can be linked through multiple in-app entry points—via the Map, Sounds, friend profiles, or Settings—making integration convenient for users.
Users can save tracks to Spotify's Liked Songs directly from Snap Map, Spotlight, and Sound Pages, not just add them to a general library.
If a user has not opened Snapchat for 24 hours, Now Playing sharing is automatically paused and only resumes when the app is opened again; users can also manually pause sharing for 3 hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely.
Spotify itself has started offering real-time social listening features, illustrating broader industry momentum toward live music sharing across platforms.
Snapchat has launched Now Playing, a new feature that lets users share what they are listening to on Spotify in real time directly on Snap Map, according to Snap Newsroom. The rollout began July 27, starting with Spotify as the first supported service.
Snap Map already reaches more than 450 million monthly users, per Music Business Worldwide. That massive built-in audience gives Now Playing an unusually wide stage for a music-sharing feature from day one.
After linking a Spotify account, users can broadcast their current track to friends on Snap Map. 9to5Mac reported that Spotify can be connected through multiple spots inside the app — the Map, Sounds tab, friend profiles, or Settings — making setup quick and flexible.
Friends' listening activity also appears in Spotlight, Snapchat's short-form video feed. Snap Newsroom says users can save any song they discover straight to Spotify's Liked Songs — not just a general playlist — directly from Snap Map, Spotlight, or Sound Pages.
Snapchat built several privacy guardrails into Now Playing. Users choose who sees their listening activity. There is no stored history of last-played songs, so nothing lingers after a session ends, according to Mac Observer.
Sharing also pauses automatically if the app goes untouched for 24 hours. It only resumes when the user opens Snapchat again. Users can also manually pause for 3 hours, 24 hours, or forever — giving full control over when the feature is active, Snap Newsroom noted.
Snapchat is not moving alone. TechBuzz noted that TikTok and Instagram have made similar pushes to embed music into their social layers, competing hard for Gen Z attention. Spotify itself has also begun rolling out real-time social listening tools, showing the trend runs across the whole industry.
Snap's Manny Adler said music is "a personal, connective expression" and that Now Playing helps people share their daily soundtracks with friends. The goal, per Snap Newsroom, is to add a social dimension to music discovery — turning a private habit into a shared one.
Now Playing is live in select regions where both Spotify and Snapchat are available. Music Business Worldwide reported that Canada is listed as "coming soon," suggesting a phased global expansion rather than a single worldwide launch.
Mac Observer noted that the feature is designed to grow over time, with Snapchat signaling that more music services beyond Spotify could be added in the future. For now, Spotify users can dive in immediately through any of the four in-app entry points.
