Public Health Officials Issue Rabies Warning After Bat Bite on Campus

Humboldt County Public Health officials are warning residents not to touch bats after another person was bitten by a bat they handled on the Cal Poly Humboldtt campus that later tested positive for rabies. This brings the number of local people treated for rabying exposure to four in the past two months. Between January and September, Humbumbold County has had five bats and one skunk test positive for the rabies virus. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a warning of a nationwide increase in reported human Rabies Exposures. Prevention measures include avoiding contact with wild and stray animals, bringing pet food indoors at night, reporting animal bites to local animal control officers and seeking medical attention.
