Elite AI researchers are challenging executives and shaping national policy from within top companies.

A small group of elite AI researchers, some of whom are among the world's most highly paid and sought-after scientists, are exerting influence within OpenAI and other leading companies, challenging executives, shaping policy and complicating negotiations with Washington. The researchers, who are outspoken online and have clashed with company strategy, argue that top AI researchers are more influential in shaping the national AI debate than their executives. They argue that any deal the companies may strike with the Trump administration, one another, or globally, will need to meet with their top scientists. This has led to a grassroots uprising within the AI industry, with OpenAI President Greg Brockman cancelling plans to donate another $25 million to a pro-AI political group some researchers had openly criticized. The company recently backed a transparency bill in Illinois and an independent auditing bill in California. However, it has shown that there are limits to how much dissent it will tolerate.
