2K Sports Sets NBA 2K25 Digital Delisting and Server Shutdown Dates

On the original Nintendo Switch version, only Play Now will remain playable after the shutdown; MyNBA, The W and MyWNBA are not available on that version.
The Switch 1 versions of MyCareer and MyTeam were already more limited than on newer consoles: MyCareer had no story content, and the game lacked cross-play support for online matchups.
The shutdown follows a roughly two-year lifecycle for annual sports releases, a pattern that can push players toward the newer installment when the previous game's online services end.
NBA 2K25 will disappear from digital storefronts on October 30, 2026, just over two years after its 2024 release. Newsy Today reported that The Verge confirmed the game's online servers will shut down on December 31, 2026, making single-player modes like MyCareer and MyTeam unplayable starting January 1, 2027. Players can still redownload the game after delisting, but without server access, core features tied to Virtual Currency will vanish.
The shutdown follows a typical two-year lifecycle for annual sports games, pushing players toward newer releases when older ones lose online functionality. Spilled.gg noted that multiplayer modes will end and Virtual Currency earnings will stop, crippling progression in story-driven modes that depend on that currency system.
Play Now, MyNBA, and The W will remain playable offline after January 1, 2027, though server-dependent features like online leagues and community sharing vanish. The Nintendo Switch 1 version gets hit hardest — only Play Now survives. The Switch 1 release already lacked MyNBA and The W entirely, and its MyCareer had no story content to begin with.
MyCareer and MyTeam depend entirely on Virtual Currency, which Spilled.gg confirmed players cannot earn after the server shutdown. Without VC generation, progression halts and core gameplay loops break. The story mode in MyCareer cannot advance, making single-player campaigns impossible to complete. This design choice essentially locks away two flagship modes that thousands of players invested time and money into.
Comic Book reported that 2K Games' standard pattern shuts down games roughly two years after release, forcing migration to the next annual installment. NBA 2K26 and NBA 2K27 already exist, so older players have a clear target. This strategy ensures the active player base consolidates around the newest title, maximizing engagement and monetization on fresh releases. The shutdown creates artificial urgency to abandon old versions.
The Nintendo Switch 1 version started with fewer features than next-gen consoles. Newsy Today noted it had no cross-play support for online matchups and lacked story content in MyCareer entirely. When the server shuts down, Switch 1 players lose even less — the version already operated at a disadvantage before January 2027.
