Netflix Cast Explains the Poetic Final Scene and Meaning of Timshel

The seventh and final episode of Netflix's limited series, "East of Eden," follows the story of Cathy Ames (Florence Pugh), who leaves her husband, Adam (Christopher Abbott), and two infant sons in early 1900s California to become a brothel madam. Adam is left to raise the boys, Cal (Joseph Zada) and Aron (Joe Anders), with the help of his Chinese-American servant, Lee (Hoon Lee). However, Cal discovers their estranged mother is alive and working as a prostitute, causing Aron to break away from his toxic family. The final scene involved Adam muttering the Hebrew word "Timshel," which translates to "thou mayest." Abbott was able to film on Abbott's last day of production.
