Former Bethesda Designer Doubts Starfield Sequel After Commercial Underperformance

Former Bethesda lead systems designer Kurt Kuhlmann says he would be surprised if Starfield gets a sequel, arguing the game was not commercially successful enough to justify one. He believes the original fell short of Todd Howard’s vision, though lessons from its development could have helped a follow-up realize that ambition. Kuhlmann singled out outpost building as a missed opportunity because it worked as a standalone feature but did not connect meaningfully with the story and missions. Bethesda continues to support Starfield with updates and downloadable content, while its main focus is The Elder Scrolls VI; Kuhlmann’s comments reflect his assessment, not an official decision on the franchise’s future.
Kuhlmann said Starfield’s development team was too small to create the amount of content the game’s expansive concept required, and that designers’ reliance on new systems caused delays that reduced time available for content creation.
Kuhlmann said Bethesda staff had expected the studio to move on to The Elder Scrolls VI after Fallout 4, but the studio instead worked on Fallout 76 and Starfield.
Todd Howard said that, as Starfield entered its third year, Bethesda planned further stories, targeted gameplay improvements and updates, as well as new Starborn content the following year.
