Rebel Wolves Considers Dropping Divisive Time-Limit Mechanic For Upcoming RPG Sequel

The Blood of Dawnwalker sold one million copies within days of launch and currently holds an 86% “Very Positive” recommendation rate on Steam, despite a rough initial release.
The timer does not continuously run while players explore the world or fight incidental enemies; time advances more deliberately through quests, quest stages and certain skill-related actions.
Critics of the system have said that it makes them feel rushed and may require multiple playthroughs to see everything, conflicting with a completionist approach to role-playing games.
Rebel Wolves is still working on bug and performance improvements for The Blood of Dawnwalker. The studio has also discussed free post-launch add-ons, although Tomaszkiewicz has not provided a roadmap.
Rebel Wolves may drop the controversial 30-day time limit from its sequel to The Blood of Dawnwalker, one of 2026's most divisive mechanics. Director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz said the studio hasn't decided whether to keep it, and may use it only when a particular story demands urgency rather than forcing it into every game Eurogamer.
The original game sold one million copies in days and holds an 86% "Very Positive" rating on Steam Steam, yet a popular launch-day mod removing the timer became an instant hit. Players felt rushed by the mechanic, which forces them to choose between exploration and saving their family within 30 days IGN.
The 30-day clock doesn't run while you explore or fight random enemies. Time advances deliberately through main quests, side quests, specific quest stages, and certain skill upgrades Creative Director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz. Running out of time doesn't trigger a "game over"—instead, the story branches and continues IGN.
Completionists hate it. They argue the timer forces multiple playthroughs to see everything and contradicts the open-world RPG fantasy. But Tomaszkiewicz pushes back: "The arguments of 'I want to see everything in one playthrough' I understand, but it's false to begin with," he said Eurogamer. Supporters say the friction creates emotional weight and hard choices.
Tomaszkiewicz made clear the studio values flexibility. "If we will have stories where it does not fit, we will not force it," he said Eurogamer. The goal is innovation, not formula repetition. Rebel Wolves is exploring other unconventional ideas to keep future RPGs from feeling like standard Witcher-clones.
This approach acknowledges a hard truth: timed mechanics historically divide players. Dead Rising, Persona's calendar, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses all generated fierce debate. Rebel Wolves seems determined to avoid cookie-cutter design—but whether dropping the timer helps or hurts remains contested among critics Game Developer Research.
Rebel Wolves is currently focused on bug fixes and performance improvements for Dawnwalker Eurogamer. The studio has also confirmed a free New Game Plus mode is coming, responding to one of the most-requested features since launch Comic Book Resources.
Beyond that, Tomaszkiewicz hasn't provided a detailed roadmap for post-launch content, but the studio has discussed free add-ons. For now, the team's priority is stabilizing the current game while fans debate whether a timer-free sequel would be bold evolution—or creative surrender.
