Marvelous has unveiled Eternal Anima, a time-traveling RPG launching March 4, 2027, across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. RPGamer describes it as a "legacy-driven time-travel RPG" where players control Wade, an amnesiac peacekeeper who breaks free from a false paradise and journeys through time to prevent the destruction of past civilizations.
The game draws on classic Japanese RPG design with modern 2D-and-3D visuals, developed by veterans including director Katsuhisa Higuchi and scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, who worked on Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X. MonsterVine reports that preorders are now open, with limited physical editions for Switch 2 and PS5 that include character cards, a two-disc soundtrack, and an art book.
Wade is branded a heretic in Urvis Ael, a society that makes seeking a better future a capital offense. After questioning this oppressive rule, Wade is forced to flee and discovers he can travel through time. HeyPoorPlayer explains that players break the rules to save the world by uncovering the lost history behind Urvis Ael and stopping past civilizations from being destroyed.
The game's backstory reveals a catastrophic calamity that sank the world's four continents beneath the ocean, leaving Urvis Ael as humanity's sole refuge—but a false paradise built on lies and despair.
Eternal Anima centers on two unique mechanics. Future Sight lets players predict and disrupt enemy actions before they happen. Psychometry reveals memories trapped within objects, enabling Wade to inherit abilities and classes from earlier generations—a core part of the game's legacy-driven design.
The turn-based combat system blends these mechanics to create strategic depth. Players must think ahead, react to what enemies will do, and leverage the wisdom of past civilizations to overcome challenges.
The game was originally teased in 2023 under the working title PROJECT LIFE is RPG before Marvelous officially revealed its true name and launch window. NettogsGameRoom notes that the announcement brought clarity to fans waiting for updates on this mystery JRPG from the beloved Japanese publisher.
Standard editions launch at $49.99 on PS5 and $59.99 on Nintendo Switch 2. Limited physical editions for both platforms bundle exclusive character cards, a two-disc soundtrack, and an art book. The Switch 2 cartridge will contain the full game, requiring no additional downloads.
Marvelous USA will publish Eternal Anima in North America, while Marvelous Europe handles distribution across Europe and Australia. All four platforms release simultaneously on March 4, 2027.
