Square Enix Announces Romancing SaGa 3 Full 3D Remake for 2027 Release

The remake’s eight protagonists include Ellen, Julian, Katarina, Khalid, Mikhail, Princess Monika, Sarah and Thomas, with each character pursuing the new Child of Destiny from a different perspective.
The Rise of Morastrum is described as a disaster that occurs every 300 years, destroys all newborn life in its year and leaves one survivor—the Child of Destiny; previous Children became either the destructive Archfiend or the Matriarch who pushed back the darkness.
Players can recruit more than 20 allies, each with individual statistics and abilities, and assign a Nonastrum—a star of fate—to influence a character’s affinity for techniques and spells.
The remake will offer Casual, Normal and Classic difficulty settings, along with the option to use either the newly arranged soundtrack or the original music.
The announcement marks the second modern return of Romancing SaGa 3: a remaster of the original was released worldwide in November 2019, following the game’s initial Super Famicom release in Japan.
Square Enix has announced Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, a full 3D remake of the classic 1995 role-playing game scheduled for February 16, 2027. The remake will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2, featuring upgraded HD visuals, fully voiced cutscenes, and an arranged soundtrack alongside the original music option.
Developed by the team behind Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, the remake delivers revamped turn-based combat, character formations, and the Glimmer system for learning techniques. Players will choose from eight protagonists—Ellen, Julian, Katarina, Khalid, Mikhail, Princess Monika, Sarah, and Thomas—each pursuing the new Child of Destiny through different storylines shaped by player decisions.
Each of the eight protagonists has unique objectives, relationships, and recruitable allies shaped by the Freeform Scenario System. The story revolves around the return of the Four Sinistrals, ancient forces seeking to open the Abyss Gates. A recurring calamity called the Rise of Morastrum appears every 300 years, destroys all newborn life that year, and leaves one survivor called the Child of Destiny.
Combat combines turn-based battles with character formations and the Glimmer system, which lets players learn powerful techniques during fights. United Attacks deliver massive damage when party members coordinate. Players can recruit more than 20 allies, each with individual stats and abilities. A Nonastrum—a star of fate—can be assigned to influence each character's affinity for techniques and spells.
Side activities return including War Mode and the Business minigame. Three difficulty levels—Casual, Normal, and Classic—let players adjust the challenge to their preference. Those preferring the original feel can swap the new arranged soundtrack for the classic music from 1995.
Romancing SaGa 3 originally launched on Super Famicom in Japan in 1995. Square Enix released a worldwide remaster in November 2019, marking the first modern return. This 2027 full remake represents the second major revival of the beloved classic, bringing it fully into the modern 3D era with contemporary voice acting and visuals.
