NASA Opens Applications for Next Generation of Space Mission Flight Directors

NASA is accepting applications through Oct. 12 for a new class of flight directors at Johnson Space Center in Houston. The directors lead mission-control teams during human spaceflight missions, including operations at the International Space Station and Artemis missions to the Moon, and could eventually support crewed missions to Mars. The job includes coordinating astronauts, flight controllers and partner organizations, managing risks in real time, and ensuring mission plans align with spacecraft capabilities and objectives. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a bachelor’s degree in a qualifying science, technology, engineering or mathematics field and substantial relevant professional experience, including making time-critical decisions in high-risk environments.
Johnson Chief Flight Director Emily Nelson said the role calls for “expert integrators” who can bring diverse teams and disciplines together into a clear, unified mission effort.
Nelson also pointed to Moon Base missions as part of the next phase of human spaceflight that flight directors are preparing to support.
The degree requirement is a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, with eligible fields specified as engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics.
NASA describes the required professional background as progressively responsible experience, in addition to experience making decisions in high-stress, high-risk situations.
