Department of Energy Announces $400 Million Annual Basic Research Funding Call

The Department of Energy announced an annual funding opportunity of up to $400 million for basic research across its Office of Science. The “Open Call” will support work in areas including advanced computing, basic energy sciences, biological and environmental research, fusion, high-energy and nuclear physics, and isotope research and production. DOE says the funding will help address major scientific challenges and build a foundation for future technologies, while advancing the administration’s emphasis on rigorous, transparent, mission-driven research. The opportunity is issued annually and invites institutions to apply for research areas not covered by more specific funding solicitations.
The DOE announcement comes after the Trump administration and the Department of Government Efficiency canceled or paused hundreds of millions of dollars in scientific research funding, including support for green-energy projects, according to Payload.
Although the funding is not specifically aimed at space projects, Payload notes that research relevant to next-generation energy technologies—particularly nuclear power—could have implications for the space industry. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has called for billions of dollars in annual investment in a nuclear-powered NASA.
DOE’s Office of Science is the country’s largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences; it funds research at hundreds of universities and stewards 10 national laboratories.
