New stem cell therapy successfully reverses Type 1 diabetes in mouse trials

Scientists from the Medical University of South Carolina have developed self-policing T cells to prevent the immune system from attacking insulin-producing cells in mouse trials. The therapy, which uses adult stem cells derived from donated umbilical cords, reverses newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes in mice by reprogramming the immune to protect insulin-producing cells. The success of the new treatment depends on early diagnosis of diabetes. The National Institutes of Health has approved a human trial for 60 participants within their first six months of a Type 1 diagnosis.
