GFL and OPAL Fuels Advance Two New Renewable Natural Gas Plants in Alabama and Georgia

OPAL Fuels and GFL Environmental are moving forward with construction of two renewable natural gas plants at landfills in Alabama and Georgia—the Stones Throw Landfill in Tallapoosa County and the Grady Road Landfill in Polk County. The projects, jointly owned 50/50 by the companies, are expected to deliver nearly 2 million MMBtu of design capacity and roughly 15 million GGEs of RNG supply, supporting fuel for about 800 Class 8 heavy-duty tractors. OPAL will market and distribute the full output through its expanding compressed natural gas and renewable natural gas dispensing network, strengthening the companies’ vertically integrated upstream-to-downstream strategy. They say the RNG is positioned to offer better economics than diesel while achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions under applicable clean-fuel rules. The companies attribute the expansion to accelerating fleet conversion driven by volatile diesel pricing, clearer regulatory conditions for combustion engines, and the availability of newer natural-gas engine platforms.
MarketWatch reported that the two landfill-based facilities “represent nearly 2 trillion BTUs of plant design capacity,” using a different BTU framing than the MMBtu figures cited elsewhere.
In TheFly’s report (via TipRanks), OPAL said it has agreed “to market and distribute the full output” from the new RNG facilities through its “expanding CNG/RNG dispensing network,” characterizing the move as “advanc[ing] … strategy to drive profitable growth across both upstream production and downstream distribution.”
OPAL co-CEO Jonathan Maurer said the projects “underscore OPAL Fuels’ momentum … with value accretive projects,” adding that bringing new RNG online “reinforces the strength of our vertically integrated model,” linking “landfill partners to high-value end markets through our growing fuel station network.”
Maurer also emphasized the projects support OPAL’s broader financial goals, stating the work “supports our focus on sustainable revenue growth, margin expansion” (as quoted in the company’s press-release excerpt).
