Wizards of the Coast Overhauls Magic Boosters and Revives God Packs for 2027

The God Packs have different, specified contents: a Booster Pack version includes 10 nonfoil rares or mythics, two nonfoil and two foil “Booster Fun” variants, plus a celebration card. A Collector Booster version contains a foil land, three foil standard-frame rares or mythics, three nonfoil Booster Fun variants, and five foil Booster Fun variants.
The earlier Magic God Pack precedent came in the original Theros block: Journey into Nyx seeded one in 1,000 packs with all 15 mythic rare gods from the Theros pantheon. The new God Packs are not limited to gods.
Wizards did not say whether God Packs will be available in the digital versions of the game, MTG Arena or Magic Online.
Wizards of the Coast is overhauling Magic: The Gathering booster packs starting in 2027 with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, bringing back rare "God Packs" that appear roughly once per 1,000 standard boosters and once per 300 Collector Boosters. Tech Raptor reports the God Packs contain only rares and mythics, alongside sweeping changes that remove foil commons and uncommons while shrinking Collector Boosters to 12 cards.
The redesign also renames Play Boosters to simply Booster Packs, makes foil rares and mythics appear more often, and introduces Japanese Showcase cards to standard packs. WDC News notes that Universes Beyond sets will follow with God Packs in 2028, though MTG Rocks says Wizards has not confirmed whether God Packs will reach digital versions like MTG Arena or Magic Online.
The standard Booster Pack version of a God Pack holds 10 nonfoil rares or mythics, two nonfoil and two foil "Booster Fun" variants, plus a celebration card. SSB Crack reports the Collector Booster God Pack differs sharply: one foil land, three foil standard-frame rares or mythics, three nonfoil Booster Fun variants, and five foil Booster Fun variants. Players opening a God Pack in Limited events get to keep it while organizers replace the pack for play.
God Packs are not entirely new to Magic. The Olympian explains the precedent comes from Journey into Nyx, part of the original Theros block, which seeded one God Pack per 1,000 booster packs. Those earlier God Packs contained all 15 mythic rare gods from the Theros pantheon. The new God Packs drop that mythology restriction and will feature a broader range of high-rarity cards across all Magic sets.
Wizards says the removal of foil commons and uncommons reflects declining player interest in lower-rarity foils and promises pack prices will not rise. MTG Rocks notes critics dispute this claim, arguing that fewer cards per pack without price cuts constitutes shrinkflation—charging the same for less product. Foil rares and mythics will now appear more frequently as compensation, though some players remain skeptical of the value trade-off.
One of the few additions is Japanese Showcase card availability in standard Booster Packs. WDC News reports this opens access to premium art variants that previously required Collector Boosters, potentially appealing to players seeking specific aesthetics. Collector Boosters shrinking from 15 cards to 12 cards represents the only other format reduction beyond the foil removal.
