Toronto Blue Jays Trade Former Closer Jeff Hoffman to Twins for Three Prospects

The Toronto Blue Jays traded pitcher Jeff Hoffman to the Minnesota Twins on deadline day, receiving three prospects in return. Minnesota sent minor league pitchers Dasan Hill and John Klein, plus infielder Dameury Pena, to Toronto, according to The Sudbury Star.
The deal is part of a busy deadline day for Toronto. The Blue Jays also moved outfielder Daulton Varsho and popular starter Kevin Gausman out the door, The Province reported.
Hoffman signed a three-year, $33 million deal with Toronto ahead of the 2025 season. The Blue Jays brought him in to replace Jordan Romano as their closer, according to The Whig. But he never locked down the role for good.
Once Louis Varland stepped up and took over closing duties, Hoffman became expendable. Toronto had no reason to keep a high-priced reliever riding the bench with a sell-off underway.
Hoffman's career has taken some wild turns. He was originally traded to the Colorado Rockies in the deal that brought star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto, according to Clinton News Record.
After years in Colorado and later Philadelphia, Hoffman reinvented himself as a shutdown reliever. His strong 2024 season earned him that big free-agent payday from the Blue Jays. But consistency as a closer proved harder to hold onto in Toronto.
Toronto is clearly in rebuild mode. The Blue Jays did not just move Hoffman — they dealt Varsho and ace starter Kevin Gausman on the same day, The Province reported. That is a lot of payroll and production walking out the door at once.
In return, Toronto is collecting minor league arms and infield depth. The three prospects coming back for Hoffman — Hill, Klein, and Pena — are all young players with upside. The Blue Jays are betting on the future, not the present.
Minnesota adds a proven big-league arm with closing experience. Hoffman has the stuff to work late innings, and the Twins are getting him on a deal that still has money left on it. For a team chasing a playoff spot, that kind of reliever depth matters, according to Paris Star Online.
