The album reached No. 11 on the Billboard 200, with singles including “The W.A.N.D.,” “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” and “It Overtakes Me” becoming college-radio hits.
Ahead of the reissue, the band released two early versions of “The Sound of Failure”: one sparse performance with Wayne Coyne singing over acoustic guitar and keys, and another driven more by piano.
The original album earned the Flaming Lips two Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “The Wizard Turns On…”
The Flaming Lips will release a massive six-disc box set on November 13 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 2006 album At War With the Mystics. Stereogum reports the deluxe edition spans six CDs and six LPs, bundling the original album with demos, alternate versions, unreleased recordings, B-sides, live concerts, and remixes that show how the band created one of their defining records.
The original At War With the Mystics reached No. 11 on the Billboard 200 and spawned college-radio hits like "The W.A.N.D." and "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song." Paste Magazine notes the album won two Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "The Wizard Turns On…," cementing its place in the band's catalog during a politically turbulent era.
The box set digs deep into the band's creative vault. Happy Mag reports the collection includes early writing sessions, dozens of demos, alternate arrangements, and B-sides that reveal how Wayne Coyne and company shaped these psychedelic pop songs. Two complete 2006 concerts are also featured, giving fans a window into how the Flaming Lips performed these tracks live during the album's initial run.
Ahead of the reissue, the Flaming Lips released two starkly different early versions of "The Sound of Failure" to highlight their songwriting evolution. One strips the track down to Wayne Coyne's voice over acoustic guitar and keys, keeping things spare and intimate. The other version centers on piano, creating a completely different emotional texture. These contrasting arrangements show how the band tried multiple approaches before settling on the final album version.
At War With the Mystics arrived in 2006 as the Iraq War raged and political tensions ran high. Theatrical Per explains that the album's pointed lyrics and psychedelic production reflected the anxiety of that moment. The Flaming Lips used swirling synths and surreal imagery to process the turmoil around them, making songs that worked as both personal reflections and political commentary.
The 20th-anniversary edition comes in three formats to suit different listeners. Collectors can grab the full six-CD box set or the six-LP vinyl version for maximum immersion. Digital listeners can stream or download the entire collection online. Head Topics confirms the release arrives November 13 via Rhino Records, giving longtime fans and newcomers alike a complete picture of one of the Flaming Lips' most vital albums.
