Major London Power Outage Affects 32 Postcodes and Disrupts Travel

The outage was first reported at about 10:32 a.m., and engineers were initially trying to restore some customers remotely; if that failed, they would assess the local substation and locate the fault.
Some properties were experiencing power that switched on and off while restoration work was underway.
An affected resident told the Daily Star that house alarms were blaring, traffic lights were out and shops were dark; the resident also said their father had to be evacuated from a gym.
Reports described the affected area as including parts of Islington, Hackney and Westminster, in addition to east and north London and the City.
A faulty underground electricity cable knocked out power to more than 5,000 customers across 32 London postcodes on Monday morning, disrupting travel and forcing evacuations from public spaces. UK Power Networks reported the outage began at 10:32 a.m., affecting homes and businesses in parts of Islington, Hackney, Westminster, and the City. Engineers worked to restore service, with power expected to return between noon and 1 p.m.
The blackout paralyzed transport hubs: Liverpool Street station's information boards went dark, and Great Northern trains stopped serving Essex Road after platform lights failed. Residents reported house alarms blaring, traffic lights out, and shops closing. One gym-goer had to be evacuated when the power cut struck.
UK Power Networks identified a fault in an underground electricity cable as the cause of Monday's outage. Engineers began working immediately to restore power, first attempting remote fixes for some customers. If those failed, teams would inspect the local substation and locate the exact fault location.
Some properties experienced flickering power — lights turning on and off — while restoration crews worked. The scale of disruption was significant: 32 postcodes across central and north London lost electricity simultaneously, making it one of the largest outages in the area this year.
London's transport system felt the immediate impact. The Independent reported that Liverpool Street station — one of the city's busiest rail hubs — went dark as information boards powered down. Great Northern trains bypassed Essex Road station entirely because platform lighting failed, leaving commuters stranded.
The outage disrupted morning commutes for thousands trying to reach work. With no platform lights, trains could not safely stop at affected stations. Yahoo News noted that passengers faced major delays and rerouting as operators worked around the blackout.
Beyond transport, the outage created dangerous street-level chaos. Traffic lights went dark across the 32 postcodes, forcing pedestrians and drivers to navigate without signals. A Daily Star source said shops went completely dark, forcing businesses to close mid-morning. House alarms triggered throughout the region, adding to the confusion.
At least one gym-goer required evacuation when power failed during operating hours. UK Power Networks warned that timing for full restoration could slip depending on what engineers discovered during their investigation of the cable fault.
