The Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square was reportedly booked for a private event at the time of the blast, with social media posts suggesting there was a wedding party and a birthday celebration for a Russian general at the venue.

Casualty numbers varied across outlets: some reports cited 3 dead and 21 injured, others cited 3 dead and 15 injured, and at least one account described two people killed plus the bomber, for a total of three fatalities.

There were indications that high-ranking military attendees might have been present, with social-media posts mentioning a birthday celebration for a general in the Russian armed forces at the venue.

Initial speculation about a gas leak was later ruled out, with authorities and state media confirming the incident was caused by an explosive device (an improvised explosive device, IED).
A bomb tore through a Moscow restaurant on Saturday evening, killing three people and wounding as many as 21 others, AP News reported. The blast hit Balzi Rossi, an upscale Italian restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square, while it was hosting a private military-linked event. Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee confirmed the cause was an improvised explosive device — a homemade bomb — ruling out an earlier claim of a gas leak.
Three people died in the blast: an unidentified woman who tried to carry the device into the venue, a security guard who stopped her at the door, and a restaurant patron killed by shrapnel, according to Fox News. Authorities launched a criminal investigation and are treating the attack as terrorism.
Bomber Stopped at the Door, Guard Dies a Hero
The unidentified woman attempted to bring the bomb onto the restaurant's outdoor terrace during the private event. A security guard confronted her and refused her entry. Both died instantly when the device detonated, News Shopper reported. The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said the guard's actions likely prevented a far deadlier attack inside the main dining room.
Casualty numbers varied across reports. The Ministry of Internal Affairs counted 15 injured, while the NAC and state media put the figure at 21, Journal Gazette reported. At least three of the wounded were identified by name in Russian media, including a 20-year-old dancer. First responders sealed off nearby roads and closed the Barrikadnaya metro station.
Top Russian Generals May Have Been the Target
The restaurant was booked for a private function with roughly 50 guests. Social media posts claimed the event included a birthday celebration for senior Russian military officers. Two generals share an August 1 birthday: Major General Vladimir Seliverstov of the Airborne Forces and Lieutenant General Alexander Yaroshevich of the Defense Ministry's transport department.
Colonel General Aleksandr Chaiko, commander of Russia's Aerospace Forces, was also linked to the gathering by Russian bloggers and journalist Oleg Kashin, AP News noted. It remained unclear whether any of the generals were injured. Military vehicles with black tactical license plates were seen parked outside the building, fueling speculation that the attack was a targeted hit on Russia's top brass.
State Media Floated Gas Leak Story — Then Walked It Back
Within minutes of the blast, Russian state TV and early reports from TASS blamed a faulty gas canister in the kitchen. The story collapsed quickly. Balzi Rossi's executive chef posted on Instagram that "everything is fine" inside the kitchen and that the explosion happened strictly outside. Local residents noted publicly that the building has no gas supply.
By late evening, the NAC issued an official statement confirming an IED, according to Albeu. The shift from gas-leak narrative to terrorism admission took roughly two hours. Russian authorities redirected focus to the security guard's bravery — a move analysts said was designed to soften the embarrassment of a bomb reaching a venue packed with military elites in the heart of Moscow.
Attack Echoes a String of High-Profile Russian Killings
The Balzi Rossi bombing is the latest in a series of high-profile attacks on Russian soil since the start of the Ukraine war. It follows the 2022 car bombing that killed Darya Dugina, the daughter of a prominent nationalist, and the 2023 St. Petersburg cafe blast that killed military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky. The March 2024 Crocus City Hall attack by ISIS-K killed over 140 people.
Security analysts say the Kudrinskaya Square attack signals a serious intelligence breach. Balzi Rossi sits inside one of Moscow's most heavily patrolled Stalin-era skyscrapers. Whoever planned the bombing knew the generals' schedules and the venue's layout, Fox News reported. Russian authorities are expected to blame Ukrainian intelligence services, a move that could be used to justify retaliatory strikes on Ukrainian targets.
