Anonymous
A homemade bomb tore through a Moscow cafe Saturday night, killing three people and wounding 21 others, according to UPI. The blast struck the Balzi Ross restaurant at 8:10 p.m. local time, sending emergency crews rushing to the scene.
Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee confirmed the explosion and said the cause remains under investigation, according to Yahoo News. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Bomb Detonates Inside Balzi Ross Restaurant
The explosion hit the Balzi Ross restaurant in Moscow at precisely 8:10 p.m. local time, according to Kansas City Star. The blast turned what would have been a normal Saturday dinner into a deadly scene. Emergency responders arrived quickly to treat the wounded and secure the area.
Three people died in the blast. Another 21 were injured, according to Tri-City Herald. The device used was described as a homemade bomb. Investigators have not yet said where inside the restaurant the bomb was placed or how large it was.
Anti-Terrorism Committee Takes Over the Investigation
Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee is leading the investigation, according to San Luis Obispo Tribune. The committee handles major domestic security threats in Russia. Its involvement signals that officials are treating this as a serious incident, not a random accident.
Investigators have not yet named any suspects or identified a motive, according to Mahoning Matters. The origin of the bomb and how it got inside the restaurant are key questions still without answers. Officials have not ruled out terrorism as a cause.
Moscow Cafe Attack Raises Fresh Security Fears
The attack comes as Russia has faced a string of high-profile bombings in recent years. In 2023, a bomb killed prominent military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky at a St. Petersburg cafe. That attack killed one and wounded dozens. Saturday's blast echoes those earlier strikes on public gathering spots.
Cafes and restaurants have become targets in Russia's ongoing security crisis tied to the war in Ukraine. Saturday's bombing in Moscow, the country's capital, is especially alarming. It shows that even the most protected city in Russia is not immune to such attacks, according to UPI.
What We Still Do Not Know
Key facts remain unclear as of Saturday night. Investigators have not said who made the bomb, who planted it, or why the Balzi Ross restaurant was chosen as a target. The identities of the three people killed have not been released publicly.
Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee is expected to release more details as the investigation moves forward, according to Kansas City Star. For now, the blast stands as one of the deadliest bombings in Moscow in recent memory.
