Emersyn "Emmy" Paisleigh Bridgers, a 6-year-old Georgia girl, died on July 27, 2026, from complications tied to a planned tonsil surgery — just days before she was set to start first grade. WTOC reported that Emmy was a student at Euharlee Elementary School in Bartow County, where she had just finished kindergarten.
The Bartow County School System called her "one of a kind" in a public tribute. Her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Rose, had given Emmy the nickname "Little Momma" because of the way she looked after her classmates. Emmy Died Before the Surgery Even Started
Emmy was scheduled for a routine tonsillectomy on July 27. According to Live 5 News, she suffered severe complications during her pre-surgical treatment — before the operation could take place. She died at her home in Euharlee, Georgia, that same day.
Bartow County Coroner Joel Guyton opened an investigation the following day. He requested Emmy's full medical records to understand exactly what treatment was given before she died. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation also launched a forensic autopsy to find the precise cause of death, according to Fox 10.
A Rose Outfit Picked Out, Never Worn
In the weeks before school started, Emmy had picked out a special rose-themed outfit to wear to her school open house. The Bartow County School System noted the heartbreak of that detail in its tribute. Mrs. Rose had called Emmy "Little Momma" because of the care and compassion she showed every classmate around her, WMBF News reported.
The school district said the loss hits hard as a new school year begins. Counselors are expected to support staff and students at Euharlee Elementary, who will face an empty seat in their first-grade classroom when school opens.
Funeral Home Covers All Costs, GoFundMe Tops $15,000
A GoFundMe was launched on July 29 by family friend Heather Smith to help Emmy's mother, Candi Baker, cover funeral and burial costs. The campaign raised $15,703 of its $22,000 goal from 293 donors, according to WECT. The Adairsville Lions Club made a notable offline donation of $1,000.
On July 31, the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home in Rockmart, Georgia, announced it would cover 100% of Emmy's funeral and burial expenses. The GoFundMe organizer updated the campaign to confirm that all money raised will go directly to the family. A Celebration of Life service was scheduled for August 4. Attendees were asked to wear pink in Emmy's honor, WKYT reported.
Tonsil Surgery Is Common but Not Risk-Free
Tonsillectomies are among the most common surgeries performed on children in the United States, with roughly 350,000 to 500,000 done each year. The overall death rate is about 7 per 100,000 cases, according to a 2022 study in JAMA. That rate jumps to 117 per 100,000 for children with complex health conditions.
Deaths before surgery are rare. They are most often linked to reactions to sedatives or complications from anesthesia before any incision is made. Depending on what the GBI autopsy finds, the case could lead to a review of pre-surgical guidelines in Georgia and potentially a medical malpractice lawsuit, WCAX noted.
