Samsung C&T Invests $100 Million in Kairos Advanced Nuclear Reactor

Kairos Power became the first U.S. non-light-water reactor developer in roughly 50 years to receive approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, marking a significant regulatory milestone for its technology.
Samsung C&T’s engineering role is expected initially to focus on the reactor’s power-generation systems and balance-of-plant infrastructure, rather than being limited to design reviews.
Hermes 2 is being developed alongside Hermes 1, a lower-power demonstration reactor intended to help Kairos Power refine the design for future commercial facilities.
Electricity from the planned reactor fleet is intended to enter the Tennessee Valley Authority grid and support Google data centers in the region.
Samsung C&T brings experience from participating in the construction of about a dozen nuclear reactors in several countries, experience that could help Kairos Power move from its first facility toward scaled reactor production.
Samsung C&T is investing up to $100 million in nuclear startup Kairos Power to help build the Hermes 2 advanced reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Android Headlines The 50-megawatt demonstration reactor will use Kairos Power's fluoride salt-cooled, high-temperature technology and is designed to operate more safely than conventional nuclear plants at lower pressure.
About $70 million will be equity investment, with the rest supplied through engineering work. Interesting Engineering Samsung C&T will handle design reviews and construction planning, and has priority to work on future Kairos commercial reactors. The Hermes 2 project is part of Kairos Power's deal with Google to build up to 500 megawatts of advanced nuclear capacity for data centers by 2035.
Kairos Power achieved a major regulatory milestone when it became the first U.S. non-light-water reactor developer in roughly 50 years to receive Nuclear Regulatory Commission approval. Interesting Engineering This marks a turning point for advanced reactor technology in America. The approval validates Kairos Power's fluoride salt-cooled design and TRISO fuel approach as safe and viable for commercial use.
Samsung C&T has built approximately a dozen nuclear reactors across several countries, giving it deep expertise in moving from demonstration projects to commercial production. Korea Herald The company will participate in design reviews and constructibility assessments for Hermes 2. Beyond design work, Samsung will also handle engineering, procurement, and construction tasks for the power-generation systems and supporting plant infrastructure.
Hermes 2 is being developed alongside Hermes 1, a smaller demonstration reactor. ANS Hermes 1 will help Kairos Power test and refine its design before moving toward full commercial facilities. Together, the two units will prove that the KP-FHR technology can operate reliably and safely, paving the way for larger deployments across the energy grid.
Electricity generated by the Hermes 2 reactor will feed into the Tennessee Valley Authority grid and supply Google's data centers in the region. Interesting Engineering The 2030 operational target for Hermes 2 aligns with Google's push to power its artificial intelligence operations with clean, reliable energy. This partnership demonstrates how advanced nuclear technology can meet the massive power demands of modern data centers without carbon emissions.
