Houston reveals ten unique space-themed football helmets honoring NASA for the UCF matchup.

The helmets were produced in sharply different quantities: 45 Sun helmets and 23 Mercury helmets, with the number dwindling to a single Pluto helmet.
The space theme is part of Houston’s annual Built By Houston celebration, which rotates among themes tied to the city, including its food, music and hip-hop legacy, architecture and engineering, sports culture, and energy industry.
Houston entered the matchup after ending UCF’s perfect record in its annual Space Game the previous November, winning 30-27. Houston coach Willie Fritz said the team had discussed its own space connection, noting, “When they call back in they say ‘Houston,’ don’t they?”
No. 20 Houston unveiled 10 hand-painted space-themed helmets for its game against UCF, each representing a celestial body from the Sun to Pluto. Houston Chronicle Quarterback Conner Weigman wore the lone Pluto helmet, which reportedly sold for $40,000 at a university gala. The "Gridiron Galaxy" collection honors Houston's deep connection to NASA's Johnson Space Center.
The helmets reflect a clever supply chain: 45 Sun helmets were made, with quantities dropping for each planet farther from the Sun, down to just one Pluto. Sporting News This visual hierarchy ties Houston's annual Built By Houston celebration — which rotates themes tied to the city's legacy — to the Cougars' matchup with UCF, which calls itself "Space U."
The helmets were created by Armando Villarreal Studios and celebrate Houston's iconic connection to space exploration. Houston Chronicle Coach Willie Fritz emphasized the city's space heritage, saying, "When they call back in they say 'Houston,' don't they?" The design pairs perfectly with Houston Blue uniforms and marks another creative entry in the Cougars' uniform rotation.
The "Gridiron Galaxy" follows the solar system's actual scale. Sporting News The Sun got 45 helmets and Mercury received 23. Earth, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune had fewer as distance increased. Only one Pluto helmet exists — reserved for Weigman, the quarterback. This diminishing quantity mirrors how smaller and more distant planets command less space.
Houston and UCF have battled annually in "Space Game" matchups, with UCF using the theme to honor its own space programs. Yahoo Sports Last November, Houston ended UCF's perfect record 30-27 in UCF's space-themed game. Now Houston responds with its own cosmic helmet showcase, escalating the space rivalry. The matchup has become a showcase for both programs' engineering and aerospace connections.
The helmets are part of Houston's Built By Houston initiative, an annual celebration that rotates themes connected to the city's identity. Express News Past themes have highlighted Houston's food, music, hip-hop legacy, architecture, engineering, sports culture, and energy industry. This year's space focus lets the Cougars tap into one of Houston's defining industries — the Johnson Space Center — while creating unforgettable visual branding.
