Zee Entertainment secures exclusive Bundesliga rights in India through 2031, signaling a major sports content push.

Zee has partnered with cinema operators to screen FIFA World Cup 2026 matches in cinemas nationwide, supported by public viewing rights granted to Novex Communications, Eagles FC Kerala, Zion Bridge and What's Up Goa, expanding reach beyond traditional TV and streaming.
To bolster live football coverage, Zee has launched four Unite8 Sports channels: Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2, and Unite8 Sports 2 HD.
There is inconsistency in reports about the end date of the Bundesliga deal: some outlets say it runs through 2031, while others cite the 2029-30 season.
Industry analysis frames the Bundesliga deal as part of Zee's broader pivot from general entertainment to premium sports rights, aimed at filling a post-Sony merger void and competing with Viacom18 and Star Sports.
Financial terms of the Bundesliga deal have not been publicly disclosed.
Zee Entertainment has secured exclusive broadcast and digital rights to Germany's Bundesliga in India for five years, starting with the 2026-27 season and running through 2030-31, according to Variety. The deal, announced on July 1, 2026, covers both linear TV and Zee's streaming platform, Zee5 — and comes just one month after Zee locked in an eight-year FIFA partnership to broadcast 39 global tournaments through 2034.
Financial terms were not disclosed. But the back-to-back football deals signal a major strategic shift for a company that sold its TEN Sports channels to Sony back in 2016 and has spent nearly a decade without first-party sports rights, according to Storyboard18.
Zee's sports comeback was driven by necessity. In January 2024, a proposed $10 billion merger with Sony Pictures Networks India collapsed, leaving Zee without a clear premium content strategy. Shortly after, Reliance and Disney merged to form JioStar, creating a near-monopoly on high-value sports like IPL cricket and ICC tournaments. Zee needed a different path, according to NDTV Profit.
Football became that path. Sony had held Bundesliga rights in India through the 2025-26 season. By securing the next cycle — 2026 to 2031 — Zee effectively stepped in the moment Sony stepped out. CEO Punit Goenka said the approach has been to "invest in properties where we see current relevance and future growth potential," according to Storyboard18.
To carry the new football rights, Zee built a dedicated infrastructure. On May 26, 2026, the company filed to launch "Unite8 Sports" — four new channels: Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2, and Unite8 Sports 2 HD. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting approved the network on June 2, according to NDTV Profit.
Bundesliga matches will also stream on Zee5. The platform's "All Access + Sports" plan costs Rs 799 for three months, with a premium annual plan at Rs 1,699. Chief Business Officer Bavesh Janavlekar said viewers will get to watch "some of the biggest stars, including Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, and Michael Olise," according to Variety.
Zee is not stopping at TV and streaming. On June 11, 2026, the company launched a public viewing program for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Cinema chains including PVR INOX and Cinepolis will screen live matches. Zee awarded regional rights to four partners: Novex Communications for national coverage, Eagles FC Kerala, Zion Bridge, and What's Up Goa, according to Yahoo Sports.
The move has caused friction in Kerala, where neighborhood football screenings have long been a free community tradition. Eagles FC's new licensing regime charges local organizers around Rs 25,000 per tournament. Groups in Malappuram and Kozhikode called the fees "new and unsettling," saying the commercialization threatens small-scale community events, according to Storyboard18.
Industry analysts frame the Bundesliga deal as a calculated bet on demographics. Cricket rights — dominated by JioStar — carry enormous price tags and high subscriber churn. Football, Zee argues, "cuts across regions and demographics" more efficiently for long-term growth. Peer Naubert, Chief Commercial Officer at Bundesliga International, called the Zee partnership "the start of a relationship built on sustained local engagement," according to NDTV Profit.
Zee has pledged to reinvest 10 to 15 percent of broadcasting and subscription revenue from these football properties into grassroots development and youth clinics across India. The company also plans a "Z X Bundesliga Football Week" to connect international stars with Indian youth talent, according to Variety.
