Florida Dengue Fever Cases Surge With Most Infections Concentrated in Hillsborough County

Dengue fever cases in Florida have surged again, with 38 new locally acquired cases reported in one week alone. This brings the statewide total of dengue cases to 111 for the year. Most cases were found in Hillsborough County, which jumped from 59 to 95 confirmed cases in one day. The Florida Department of Health is also seeing a few confirmed cases of West Nile virus. Currently, 11 counties are under either a mosquito-borne illness advisory or mosquito-bourne alert. The state agency compiles weekly data on mosquito-related viruses in a report called "Florida Arbovirus Surveillance". Dengue fever, sometimes called breakbone fever, can cause severe aches and pains, especially in the legs, joints, and back. There is no cure for dengued and there are no specific treatments for the condition.
