John Arnold Shares Insights on Massive AI Data Center Expansion at CNBC Forum

The American landscape is undergoing one of the largest transformations in decades as tech companies are expanding larger data centers to meet demand for computer processing to power AI. The country houses nearly 100 hyperscale data centers, which consume at least 100 megawatts of power at peak operation, enough to power about 80,000 homes. Roughly 40 percent of these data centers were built on previously developed land, while the rest took over farmland, shrubland and forest. Data centers are also being built with their own power generation to counter local criticism that these operations increase the cost of electricity. SpaceX's Colossus 2 data center was built in the Memphis area next to an existing gas power plant and is being powered by temporary gas turbines, which can be more polluting than grid power. Meta is currently building a data center campus called Hyperion on a tract of land in rural Louisiana and may soon be overtaken by 2030.
