IGPL Awards Pranavi Urs Rs 1 Crore for Historic Asian Games Golf Gold
Anonymous
Golfer Pranavi Urs made history on October 3 by winning India's first women's golf gold medal at the Asian Games. Zee News reported that the Indian Golf Premier League awarded her Rs 1 crore for the achievement at an event in New Delhi. Her teammates Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar will each receive Rs 25 lakh for winning team silver.
The 23-year-old from Mysuru finished at 15-under-par, one stroke ahead of competitors from Singapore and China. The News Mill noted this breaks a 24-year drought—India's last Asian Games golf gold came in 2002 when Shiv Kapur won the men's title. Former Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur announced the cash rewards on behalf of AM Green IGPL at Qutab Golf Course.
A Historic Win After Two Decades
Pranavi Urs shot 265 over four rounds at Kasugai Country Club East Course in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Daily Hunt confirmed she became the first Indian woman ever to claim an Asian Games golf gold. The victory matters because Indian golf has largely been missing from the medal podium at the Games since 2002.
Team Silver and Rs 75 Lakh in Rewards
India's women's golf team—Pranavi Urs, Aditi Ashok, and Diksha Dagar—finished second with a combined 14-under-par 546. News18 reported that each team member will pocket Rs 25 lakh individually for the silver medal. This reflects growing corporate backing for women's sports through private leagues like IGPL.
Private League Backing Makes a Difference
The Indian Golf Premier League, partnered with broadcaster NDTV and company AM Green, pledged the cash rewards hours after Urs won. Zee News noted that Anurag Singh Thakur, a five-term MP and former Cabinet Minister, formally announced the prizes. This fast-track reward signals serious commercial investment in women's golf beyond government support alone.
Urs Sets Her Sights Higher
Pranavi already made waves last season by becoming the first female golfer to win an IGPL title in a mixed-gender professional field. The News Mill reported she plans to celebrate briefly in Tokyo before returning home. At 23, she is positioned to dominate Indian women's golf for years to come.
