Key House races across the country shape control of Congress as Democrats chase majority.

Several closely watched House contests could help determine control of Congress, and Democrats need three seats to retake the House as redistricting has reshaped the battlefield. Arizona’s open 1st District is viewed as a toss-up, with Republican Jay Feely’s name recognition and Trump endorsement facing Democrat Amish Shah; New Mexico’s 2nd District remains competitive despite a Democratic tilt, as Republican Greg Cunningham emphasizes border security and law enforcement against incumbent Gabe Vasquez. In Ohio’s 5th District, Republican incumbent Bob Latta touts his legislative record and district visits, while opponents question his accessibility and ties to corporate donors. A national analysis describes a favorable political climate for Democrats, citing stronger Democratic voter motivation and weakening Trump support among non-MAGA Republicans, while MAGA voters remain highly committed. In South Carolina, Democratic secretary of state candidate Jason Belton proposes more support for small businesses and nonprofits, while Sioux Falls voters in the South Dakota governor’s race cited education, healthcare, representation and attention to state issues.
Arizona’s 1st District has shifted politically in recent elections: Joe Biden narrowly won it in 2020, while Donald Trump narrowly carried it in 2024. Rep. David Schweikert, who had held the seat since 2011, is not seeking re-election and unsuccessfully ran for governor.
Gabe Vasquez won New Mexico’s 2nd District by just 0.7 percentage points in 2022, and Trump carried it by 1.8 points in 2024, underscoring the seat’s competitiveness despite its Democratic-leaning rating.
Belton has also proposed auditing the secretary of state’s office, seeking greater oversight of the State Election Commission, and making services more accessible in rural counties, potentially through information kiosks or representatives at DMV offices. In South Carolina, the secretary of state does not administer elections.
Sioux Falls voter Mary Mortenson said the next governor should build public trust by clearly explaining what they plan to do, while Andrea Kooiman urged candidates to focus on South Dakota issues rather than federal politics.
