Senate Expected to Vote on Stock Trading Ban and Data Center Bill

Senate Republicans are expected to vote on a stock trading ban and a data center bill before the 2026 midterms. The bills aim to address data center-related affordability concerns and limit members' ability to profit on the stock market while in office. However, neither bill is expected to overcome the 60-vote filibuster threshold as Democrats signal opposition. The Ratepayer Protection Act, which passed the House on a 417-3 vote earlier this month, would require large artificial intelligence data centers to cover their own energy infrastructure costs rather than pass them down to customers. Sen. Schumer, D-N.Y., called the bill a "toothless messaging bill" and Sen. Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, the top Democrat on the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, called the voter ID provision a "poison pill".
