Blizzard revives Heroes of the Storm with a new character after years in maintenance mode.

Xal’atath was introduced in World of Warcraft’s Legion expansion as a voice associated with the Shadow Priest artifact weapon before becoming a major antagonist in the current Midnight storyline.
When Blizzard moved Heroes of the Storm into maintenance mode in 2022, it said future patches would focus primarily on client sustainability and bug fixes, with balance updates provided as needed.
Blizzard’s reduction of support for Heroes of the Storm began earlier with the elimination of the game’s esports division, after which new-content updates slowed substantially and eventually stopped.
Heroes of the Storm has undergone several major phases since its 2010 announcement, including a 2015 release and a 2017 “2.0” relaunch that added new maps, heroes and a loot-box system; the 2.0 update initially attracted more users than the original version.
Microsoft has recently provided additional signs of support for the game by offering hero licenses through Xbox Game Pass and distributing a free BlizzCon skin.
Heroes of the Storm is getting its first new hero in six years. Kit Guru reports that Blizzard announced Xal'atath, a major villain from World of Warcraft's current Midnight expansion, will join the game's roster. The character arrives on the Public Test Realm on September 14 and launches fully on September 28.
This marks the game's biggest content push since Blizzard moved Heroes into maintenance mode in 2022. The Gamer notes the announcement surprised fans at BlizzCon 2026. Blizzard has not promised a full relaunch, but said future heroes may follow depending on community response.
Xal'atath has deep roots in World of Warcraft lore. Cine Linx explains she started as a voice tied to the Shadow Priest artifact weapon in the Legion expansion. She evolved into a full antagonist driving the plot of World of Warcraft's current Midnight storyline as a Void Lord servant.
Hogger was the last new hero added to Heroes of the Storm back in 2020. After that, Blizzard cut the game's esports division and shifted to maintenance mode in 2022. The company promised only bug fixes and balance tweaks, with new content stopped entirely until now.
Recent moves suggest Microsoft is backing Heroes of the Storm again. Tech Net Books reports Blizzard announced the new hero during the BlizzCon opening ceremony, a prime-time slot reserved for major reveals. Microsoft has also offered hero licenses through Xbox Game Pass and distributed free BlizzCon skins to boost engagement.
Blizzard has not committed to a full 3.0 relaunch or regular content schedules. Kit Guru reports the company teased that another hero may be revealed later. Success of Xal'atath will shape whether Heroes moves past one-off updates into sustained development again.
