Tennessee Pauses 2026 Execution Following Lethal Injection Drug Complications

Tennessee has halted a planned execution in 2026 due to concerns over the effectiveness of the state's lethal injections after an inmate, Christa Pike, survived two doses of a lethal drug and remained alive for nearly an hour before being taken to a hospital. This is the second time in five years that Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, has halted executions due to safety concerns; in 2022, he ordered a review after prison officials failed to properly test the drugs before an execution. The state also ordered a third-party review of the execution attempt, which resulted in Pike remaining alive for almost an hour.
