Tennessee Governor Suspends All Executions This Year Following Botched Lethal Injection Incident

Christa Gail Pike, a convicted murderer who was scheduled to be executed in Tennessee, survived a botched execution despite being given two doses of a lethal drug. Despite being alive and snoring after the attempted lethal injection, Pike was taken from the prison by ambulance. Governor Bill Lee has ordered a thorough review into the incident and announced that no further scheduled executions will be carried out this year. Lawyers for Pike filed an emergency motion to the US Supreme Court to halt the execution, claiming she was in 'unnecessary agony' and violating her right to be execution free of cruel and unusual punishment. It is unclear when a follow-up execution could occur and if lethal injection will again be the method.
