New Biography Details Marriage Strains and Eventual Divorce of Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen

A biography by Lars Anderson revisits Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen’s relationship, including their 2009 proposal and the strains that preceded their 2022 divorce. It says Bündchen wrote Brady a heartfelt letter before the 2018 season asking for more time, attention and help with their children, and describes efforts to repair the relationship before it ended. The book says Brady’s return to the NFL in 2022 intensified the conflict; former Buccaneers staff reportedly described him as deeply stressed, and he lost nearly 20 pounds during training camp, prompting concern among some team members. It also claims that Brady’s 2025 Instagram post of himself throwing a football with the caption “True Love,” shared shortly after Bündchen had a child with Joaquim Valente, was viewed by one of Brady’s friends as a pointed message to his ex-wife; Brady has not confirmed that interpretation. Representatives for Brady and Bündchen did not immediately comment.
Anderson’s account says Brady staged a fake flooding emergency at Bündchen’s New York townhouse to get her home for his January 2009 proposal. He had lit candles, scattered rose petals and a four-carat cushion-cut diamond ring ready; Bündchen initially worried about his recently operated-on knee when he began to kneel.
The 2018 letter reportedly asked Brady to stop responding to his constantly buzzing phone while at home. Bündchen also wanted time to sleep in and more room for her own career, including work on environmental issues and climate change.
Bündchen later said she had moved to Boston, focused on creating a supportive home for their children and backed Brady’s ambitions, while putting her own work on hold. Brady acknowledged in 2021 that she had worked less for 10–12 years while raising their family and adapting to his career.
Anderson’s explanation for why the “True Love” caption might have resonated with people around Brady is that Bündchen had repeatedly used that phrase to describe Brady’s relationship with football. The article also notes the post could simply be read as a declaration of love for the sport; neither Brady nor Bündchen has confirmed the alleged message.
