Red Sox Outfielder Roman Anthony Misses Rest of Wild Card Series with Wrist Injury

Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony will miss the rest of Boston’s American League Wild Card Series against the Yankees after an MRI found new muscle strains in his right wrist. The 22-year-old left Game 1 after discomfort worsened during check swings; he had missed 101 games this season with a torn ligament in the same hand and continued to experience intermittent pain after returning. Boston sought approval to replace him on its roster; if replaced, Anthony would be ineligible for the remainder of the series and a potential ALDS. His absence comes as Boston tries to recover from a 9-0 Game 1 loss and avoid elimination in Game 2.
Anthony Seigler and Curtis Mead were identified as possible roster replacements. Seigler had been out since mid-September with wrist inflammation, while Mead was working back from a wrist fracture and had taken live batting practice over the weekend.
Jahmai Jones was set to take Anthony’s place atop Boston’s lineup for Game 2, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Anthony played 55 regular-season games and hit .245 with five home runs, a .339 on-base percentage and a .396 slugging percentage.
Boston sent Anthony back to the city Tuesday night for an MRI after he left Game 1 in the sixth inning with right-hand discomfort.
