U.S. and Bangladesh Face Severe Measles Outbreaks Amid Rising Unvaccinated Cases

Pennsylvania reported its fifth measles-associated death of 2026, an unvaccinated Lancaster County resident; the state has recorded 943 cases across 39 counties and 176 hospitalizations, with Lancaster County at the center of the outbreak. Officials have withheld identifying details, and the five Pennsylvania deaths are the only measles deaths reported in the United States this year. Georgia confirmed five cases among siblings in Jasper County, bringing its 2026 total to 21; the children were unvaccinated or under-vaccinated, and contact tracing is underway. Bangladesh has reported more than 1,000 suspected or confirmed measles-related deaths and nearly 190,000 cumulative suspected cases; 21,520 confirmed cases were recorded among patients seeking hospital care, though not all patients are tested. Health officials emphasize that vaccination offers strong protection and urge people with possible measles symptoms to call a healthcare provider before visiting in person.
Pennsylvania had not reported a measles death in 35 years before the five deaths this year. The state’s previous measles-death outbreak was in 1991, when at least 13 people died.
The earlier Pennsylvania deaths included two infants too young to be vaccinated, an unvaccinated 18-year-old who developed a severe neurological complication, and an unvaccinated 40-year-old woman with chronic health conditions, including COPD.
In the latest Bangladesh figures, the combined death toll was 1,096: 995 suspected measles deaths and 101 confirmed deaths. The country also reported 113 new laboratory-confirmed infections in the preceding 24 hours.
Bangladesh had hospitalized 166,310 patients with suspected measles since March 15; 159,519 had recovered, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
