Bharat Forge, Pratt & Whitney Plan DRDO UAV Engine Integration

Pratt & Whitney Vice President and Country Head Ashish Saraf said the company’s turboprop engines have a proven record of reliability in demanding operational environments, a capability he described as important for India’s HALE programme.
The initiative highlights the growing role of India’s private-sector engineering companies in developing complex aerospace platforms and critical propulsion systems for the defence ecosystem.
Bharat Forge Aerospace’s business includes the design, development and manufacture of aerospace, defence and marine systems, structures and components, expanding the company’s stated role beyond the specific UAV integration effort.
Separately, Bharat Forge subsidiary Kalyani Strategic Systems has partnered with FN Herstal to develop small-arms and counter-unmanned-aircraft-system capabilities in India under the Make in India policy.
Bharat Forge and Pratt & Whitney Canada will work together to fit advanced turboprop engines into India's new high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle. Raksha Anirveda reported that Pratt & Whitney will test if its engines work well with the drone, while Bharat Forge will handle the engine-airframe integration. The project backs India's push for self-reliant defense technology and stronger domestic aerospace capabilities.
The HALE UAV is being developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation for long-endurance surveillance, intelligence and reconnaissance missions across land and maritime regions. The Hindu Business Line noted that this partnership highlights how India's private-sector engineering firms are now playing a bigger role in complex aerospace and defense systems.
Pratt & Whitney's turboprop engines have a strong track record in harsh operational environments, according to Ashish Saraf, the company's Vice President and Country Head. Swarajya reported that Saraf emphasized this reliability matters for India's HALE programme. The engines will undergo thorough testing to ensure they meet the drone's demanding performance and altitude requirements.
Bharat Forge will lead the critical work of fitting the engine into the airframe and designing all necessary installation systems. Business Standard reported that the company brings expertise in aerospace, defense and marine systems design and manufacturing. This partnership expands Bharat Forge's aerospace capabilities beyond traditional manufacturing into cutting-edge UAV propulsion systems.
The collaboration supports India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, a government policy focused on reducing dependence on foreign defense imports. ETV Bharat explained that this partnership strengthens India's strategic self-reliance and defense preparedness. By combining Bharat Forge's integration expertise with Pratt & Whitney's engine technology, India aims to build world-class indigenous UAV platforms.
Beyond the HALE UAV project, Bharat Forge subsidiary Kalyani Strategic Systems has partnered with Belgian firm FN Herstal to develop small-arms and counter-drone systems in India. Business Standard reported this collaboration advances India's Make in India defense manufacturing policy. These efforts show how Bharat Forge is positioning itself across multiple critical defense technology areas.
