Fontaines D.C. release experimental new single Tongue ahead of upcoming album Dopamine Chamber

“Tongue” followed “Marianne,” which had been released in August as the album’s lead single.
Rosalía is the album’s only guest and the first artist to feature on a Fontaines D.C. studio album.
A review notes that “Tongue” is unusually sparse lyrically: until its final verse, Chatten repeats the same three lines.
The album’s 11-song tracklist includes “Six Shot Morning,” “Mimesis,” “Demolition,” “One Man,” “Japan” and “Intimate,” alongside the previously noted singles and Rosalía collaboration.
Fontaines D.C. have released 'Tongue,' the second single from their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, arriving October 16 via XL Recordings DIY. The Irish band dropped a John Angus Stewart-directed music video filmed in New York City, marking a bold studio-led approach far removed from their earlier live-band sound Live4Ever.
Frontman Grian Chatten described the new album as darker and more 'corrupted'—a catastrophic warning wrapped in experimental production DIY. The track strips back familiar elements, layering manipulated bass, distorted vocals, guitars, piano, and orchestration to create something markedly different from the band's earlier work Treble Zine.
'Tongue' represents Fontaines D.C.'s most studio-based song to date Far Out. Guitarist Conor Curley explained the band deliberately held back live-band elements, deploying them only when the track truly needed them DIY. This approach extends the experimental direction begun on 2024's Romance, where producer James Ford encouraged the band to think beyond what a five-piece could play live.
The track uses an unusual approach to songwriting. For most of its length, Chatten repeats the same three lines Far Out. Only in the final verse does he break pattern, delivering new lyrics that shift the song's emotional weight. This sparse construction makes the climax hit harder, rewarding patient listeners with a payoff.
Dopamine Chamber includes a collaboration with Spanish artist Rosalía on the track 'Where Is Gone?'—marking the first time any artist has featured on a Fontaines D.C. studio album DIY. Rosalía is the album's sole guest across its 11-song tracklist. The album also features 'Six Shot Morning,' 'Mimesis,' 'Demolition,' 'One Man,' 'Japan,' and 'Intimate,' alongside previously released singles 'Marianne' and 'Tongue.'
Before 'Tongue' arrived, Fontaines D.C. released 'Marianne' in August as the album's lead single Treble Zine. Both tracks signal the band's continued evolution under producer James Ford's guidance. Dopamine Chamber arrives October 16, offering the full picture of how far the Dublin group has pushed into studio innovation and darker sonic territory.
