Officers performed life-saving measures on the victims before firefighters arrived.
Berkeley police received multiple calls about possible gunfire beginning at 10:48 a.m.
Two people were fatally shot Friday morning on Panoramic Way near the Oakland-Berkeley border, with one person taken into custody. SFGATE reported the victims as a 63-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man. Berkeley police received multiple calls about gunfire at 10:48 a.m., and officers from both Oakland and Berkeley responded, administering life-saving measures before the victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Neighbors heard two distinct gunshots around 10:45 a.m. on the affluent Panoramic Hill residential area. Hoodline described the incident as occurring at 499 Panoramic Way in the 400 block, a hillside street straddling Oakland and Berkeley near the UC Berkeley campus. Surveillance audio captured a gunshot, followed by a man crying and screaming, then a second gunshot minutes later. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by 11 a.m.
Neighbor Alessandro Isolani told CBS San Francisco: "We heard two bangs, not too far apart... I've lived up here on Panoramic Hill for 20-something years, and I have never seen any violent crime up here." The neighborhood has historically experienced negligible violent crime, making the shooting shocking to residents.
Oakland Police Department Assistant Chief Casey Johnson confirmed that one individual was taken into custody. At 12:15 p.m., law enforcement informed area residents there was no active threat or need to shelter in place. SFGATE reported that Johnson stated: "We aren't looking currently for anyone at large. There is no current threat to the neighborhood." UC Berkeley Police issued a campus advisory confirming no ongoing threat to students or staff.
Investigators are not ruling out a murder-suicide scenario, according to OPD statements. A firearm was recovered at the scene. A sister of one victim told KTVU FOX 2 that her sister was killed and noted that her brother-in-law had been "experiencing mental health challenges."
The two victims were Michelle Walker, 63, and Bryan Walker, 64, prominent fashion industry figures. Michelle founded the Bay Area clothing brand *Bryn Walker* in 1992, which Bryan managed as CEO. Local News Matters reported both victims were found dead of gunshot wounds. The brand operates more than 1,000 boutique retail stores nationwide through wholesale accounts and regional storefronts in Berkeley.
Their sudden deaths create leadership vacuums at the apparel company. Family members and neighbors described the couple as long-standing members of the community, making the deaths particularly shocking given the peaceful nature of the Panoramic Hill neighborhood and their professional standing in the region.
The 400 block of Panoramic Way sits directly on the border between Oakland and Berkeley, complicating jurisdictional authority. While properties carry Berkeley ZIP codes (94704/94705), municipal boundaries assign the property to Oakland's jurisdiction. Oakland Police Department holds primary homicide investigation authority.
Officers from both Berkeley Police and Oakland Police arrived simultaneously around 10:50 a.m., according to Local News Matters. They administered emergency CPR and life-saving measures before Berkeley Fire Department medics arrived and pronounced both victims dead. The rapid joint response highlighted standard cross-border mutual aid protocols triggered during active-shooter dispatches in the hillside residential area.
