A PhD scholar at IIT Delhi died at AIIMS on October 3, more than 45 days after being found unconscious and injured at his rented home in Munirka on August 18, Times of India reported. Delhi Police registered an FIR under the abetment-of-suicide provision on October 4, following Supreme Court directions and a complaint from an IIT Delhi security officer, India TV News said.
Police said the incident occurred off campus and the 40-year-old scholar was alone in the home according to outside CCTV footage, Careers360 reported. Neither family members nor witnesses raised suspicion against anyone, and the exact circumstances of how he sustained his injuries remain under investigation.
The scholar was discovered unconscious at his rented accommodation in southwest Delhi's Munirka village on August 18. He was immediately transported to AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. Despite 46 days of medical care, he died on October 3, Hindustan Times reported.
The exact cause of death has not been made public. Police are still examining the circumstances in which he sustained the initial injuries that led to his hospitalization.
Delhi Police registered FIR number 243/2026 under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which covers abetment of suicide, Careers360 reported. The action came after the Supreme Court directed authorities to investigate and following a formal complaint from an IIT Delhi security officer.
Police did not clarify whether the FIR names or accuses any specific individual. The investigation remains open as officers review CCTV footage and statements collected so far.
According to outside CCTV footage reviewed by police, the scholar appeared to be alone in his rented home when the incident occurred. The off-campus location means the incident fell outside IIT Delhi's direct jurisdiction, though the university's security team flagged the case.
No family members or witnesses have raised suspicion against any specific person in connection with his death. Investigators are continuing to examine all available evidence to determine what happened.
