Bayer Announces $2.2 Billion Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Campus and 600 Jobs in Ohio

The New Albany campus is planned for a 200-acre site in the New Albany International Business Park.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine described the announcement as “Ohio’s largest international healthcare project” and Germany’s largest direct investment in Ohio history.
Bayer said the project builds on more than $7 billion in U.S. pharmaceutical research-and-development and manufacturing spending over the preceding five years.
Bayer executive Sebastian Guth said the U.S. share of the company’s pharmaceutical revenue rose from about 20% when he arrived in 2018–19 to around 35% at the time of the announcement; he also said Bayer’s annual U.S. research spending had grown from less than $500 million to well above $1.2 billion.
Bayer announced a $2.2 billion investment to build its first North American pharmaceutical manufacturing campus in New Albany, Ohio. WSJ The German drugmaker expects to create 1,500 construction jobs and 600 permanent positions with competitive pay. Drug-substance production will begin in 2031, with a second module for finished drugs launching in 2034.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine called it "Ohio's largest international healthcare project" and Germany's biggest direct investment in the state's history. WSJ Bayer frames the move as part of a long-term strategy to expand U.S. operations and bolster medicine supplies — not a response to any single policy change.
The facility will occupy a 200-acre site in the New Albany International Business Park. WSJ Bayer designed it as a flexible, modular operation using digital tools and automation. The campus will initially produce medicines for oncology, cardiovascular, and kidney disease — three major therapeutic areas for the company.
Bayer has dramatically expanded its American footprint in recent years. WSJ The U.S. share of the company's pharmaceutical revenue jumped from about 20% in 2018–19 to roughly 35% by the announcement date. Annual research spending in America climbed from less than $500 million to well above $1.2 billion in the same period.
This Ohio project follows Bayer's broader commitment to American manufacturing. WSJ Over the five years before the announcement, the company spent more than $7 billion on U.S. pharmaceutical research and manufacturing. The New Albany campus represents the latest step in Bayer's strategy to strengthen its presence in one of the world's largest drug markets.
