IO Interactive Delays Nintendo Switch 2 Version of 007 First Light to March 2027

IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak had previously said the team wanted to ensure the Switch 2 version was as strong as possible: “I don’t want to hear it wasn’t a good version.” He also acknowledged earlier that the port needed more time to reach the studio’s standards.
007 First Light was among the first major Nintendo Switch 2 ports announced and was repeatedly featured in Nintendo Direct presentations, raising its profile among Nintendo players before the delays.
IO Interactive has not explained why the Switch 2 release was delayed so close to launch. IGN raised possible factors including waiting for a larger console user base, avoiding competition with GTA 6 and the risk that a longer delay could weaken the game’s momentum.
The delay means the Switch 2 edition will arrive almost a year after the other console and PC versions, rather than launching simultaneously as originally planned.
IO Interactive has pushed the Nintendo Switch 2 version of 007 First Light to March 2027, marking the second delay for the James Bond origin story on the handheld console. The extra time will go toward polishing performance and delivering the quality Nintendo players expect, according to WorthPlaying. The delay means the Switch 2 edition will arrive nearly 10 months after the successful May 2026 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak said the studio wants to ensure the Switch 2 version is as strong as possible. "I don't want to hear it wasn't a good version," he stated. The developer has not announced an exact March 2027 release date, though a playable demo will appear at Tokyo Game Show starting September 17, Nintendo Wire reported.
007 First Light was originally set to launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in May 2026 alongside other platforms. In April 2026, IO Interactive delayed only the Switch 2 version to fall 2026, citing performance concerns, according to Games.gg. The developer has now pushed the release to March 2027—the second postponement in five months.
This extended gap stands in stark contrast to the simultaneous launch on other platforms. The Switch 2 edition will now arrive roughly 10 months after the May 2026 releases on PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC, Final Weapon noted. Early Gamescom demos in August 2026 received broadly positive impressions, but questions lingered about performance in crowded scenes.
Bringing IO Interactive's demanding Glacier engine to Nintendo's hybrid handheld requires significant optimization work. The game features complex AI systems, large crowd rendering, and intensive stealth-action mechanics—all challenging to scale down without sacrificing quality. CEO Abrak emphasized the studio's commitment to avoiding a poor port.
Industry analysts suggest IO Interactive may also be waiting for a larger Switch 2 user base to emerge by early 2027. IGN noted that the extended delay risks eroding the game's momentum, but the bigger installed base could offset weak early sales from a rushed launch.
007 First Light was among the first major Switch 2 ports announced and appeared repeatedly in Nintendo Direct presentations, raising expectations among Nintendo fans. Mirror reported that player reactions are mixed—some frustrated by the repeated delays, others relieved the studio is prioritizing polish over a broken experience.
The Switch 2 demo will be playable at Tokyo Game Show this month, giving players their first hands-on look since Gamescom 2026. IO Interactive has not explained the specific technical challenges that necessitated the second delay, leaving some uncertainty about the final product's quality and performance.
