Google Confirms 2034 ChromeOS Support Timeline Amid Transition to Android Googlebooks

Google has made official its timeline to provide ChromeOS updates and security patches through mid-2034 as it shifts from Chromebooks to Android-based Googlebooks. Although Chromebooks are advertised with 10-year support, devices bought today may receive only about eight more years of ChromeOS updates; Google says some newer models, particularly commercial devices, can migrate to Googlebook OS but has not identified eligible devices or explained the process. Options are expected for Chromebooks whose support windows extend beyond 2034, though details have not been released. Googlebooks will also receive 10 years of support, while management features for enterprise and education customers are not expected until the second half of 2027. Google has not clarified whether the 2034 timeline applies equally to consumer devices, and existing Chrome Enterprise and Education licenses will not automatically carry over; new Googlebook licensing terms remain unannounced.
Googlebook OS is based on Android and integrates Gemini AI; the new Googlebooks also use more powerful processors than Chromebooks.
The 10-year Googlebook support period is counted from the launch of the processor used in the device, rather than from the laptop’s launch.
Google says it will continue supporting web-app management for IT administrators and provide web developers with a robust set of APIs, despite Googlebook OS adding support for Android apps.
Google’s 2034 ChromeOS support timeline had already appeared in a court filing; publishing it on a support page made the plan more explicit to customers.
