JioHotstar launches dedicated generative AI division, hiring over 75 specialized roles

JioHotstar is launching a dedicated generative AI and machine-learning division and is recruiting more than 75 AI-related roles across engineering, production automation, research, design, and product, with unconventional job titles that blend creative work and AI systems design. The company says it is aiming to internalize AI capabilities rather than rely on third-party tools, using teams that integrate storytelling and technology throughout the content lifecycle. As proof of concept, JioHotstar points to its first fully AI-generated series, Mahabharat: Ek Dharmayudh, saying it was completed three to five times faster by running ideation, visual generation, and post-production in parallel. On the consumer side, it already uses conversational AI for multilingual, voice-based content discovery and is developing more interactive recommendation and discovery experiences. JioHotstar and its parent JioStar are also exploring AI-driven advertising and other personalization efforts, positioning control over the underlying technology as a competitive advantage as India’s streaming market matures. The hiring follows recent leadership and investment moves tied to expanding AI-assisted content pipelines and interactive storytelling formats.
JioStar (the parent of JioHotstar) appointed Stephan Bugaj—formerly at Genvid Entertainment, Pixar and Telltale Games—as Senior Vice President for Generative AI Content and Technology, with a mandate including “developing AI-assisted content pipelines” and “interactive storytelling formats.”
Reliance’s FY26 annual report says it plans to integrate AI into “content creation, recommendation systems, personalization, localization and audience engagement,” has already introduced conversational content discovery, and is testing AI-assisted production workflows; the report also cites JioHotstar’s “451 million monthly active users in FY26.”
Bloomberg reports the push is grounded in executives’ belief there is “real money” in AI content after the platform’s first experiment: “a machine-made retelling of a 2,500-year-old war epic.”
JioHotstar says it is working toward advertising that “responds to context and viewer emotion rather than inventory slots,” while recommendations should work “more like dialogue than a browse grid.”
